The bubonic plague better known as the black death was a bacterial disease and was helped spread by wild rodents. The plague played a big role in the fourteenth century killing about one-third of Europe’s population, this played a big role in the literature writings of the time. It also took a toll on one of the most famous writers in literature William Shakespeare. The plague affected him personally taking the lives of relatives and friends. The black death took part in a few of our previous readings from our literature book including the Pardoners Tale and Federigos Falcon. The bubonic plague took place more than once between the fourteenth century and the nineteenth century. Focusing more specifically in the late 1340s to the early 1350s. During this short time period it took many lives. This disease began in China it is believed to have started from many earthquakes, flooding, and famines which caused the rats infected with the yersinia pestis bacterial disease to leave their shelters in search of food and shelter to live in. This forced them to come in contact with domestic rodents. (The book the black plague) It was then spread by twelve ships that docked in Messina which is at the bottom of Italy near the â€Å"toe† of the â€Å"boot† in Italy. When the ships docked many of the people aboard were dead and the rest of the passengers were very sick and covered with black boils that had blood and pus coming out of them. People had heard talk about the disease happening from trading and trade routes but never really experienced it. In a short time the disease really took over Italy’s population and the the plague began to spread all throughout Europe. The plague was a bacterial disease that was easily spread by rats and fleas. When the rats with the disease would die the fleas feeding off the rats would need a new food source so they would go to the humans giving them the disease from the rats. This disease was very easily spread so it did not matter where you lived or who you were everyone was easily affected by this terrible disease. In the Pardoner’s Tale death is brought up many times throughout the story. Everyone is fearful of Death because it does not care who it kills or affects as stated in the story, â€Å"Who kills us all round here, and in a breath.† (Chaucer) Although Death is perceived by the three men as a person, the tavern-knave was referring to the plague, not a man. They go off in search for the so-called man †death† because as it says in the story, †He’s killed a thousand†¦,†(chaucer) including one of their old friends and they were not going to let this man kill anymore. The three men went out in search for death but because they beca, me greed death took them as well. it was in a different way than others in the story but it still added to the large death toll from the black death of the time. Everyone during the story was worried about dying from the plague because it was believed that it was sent down for their sins. In fear of dying the people go to the pardoner and pay him so their sins are forgiven not realizing that no matter what they do or how much they pay they cannot stop this deadly bacterial disease whom they called death.

What Is the Standard Normal Distribution in Statistics

Bell curves show up throughout statistics. Diverse measurements such as diameters of seeds, lengths of fish fins, scores on the SAT, and weights of individual sheets of a ream of paper all ​form bell curves when they are graphed. The general shape of all of these curves is the same. But all of these curves are different because it is highly unlikely that any of them share the same mean or standard deviation. Bell curves with large standard deviations are wide, and bell curves with small standard deviations are skinny. Bell curves with larger means are shifted more to the right than those with smaller means.​ An Example To make this a little more concrete, let’s pretend that we measure the diameters of 500 kernels of corn. Then we record, analyze, and graph that data. It is found that the data set is shaped like a bell curve and has a mean of 1.2 cm with a standard deviation of .4 cm. Now suppose that we do the same thing with 500 beans, and we find that they have a mean diameter of .8 cm with a standard deviation of .04 cm. The bell curves from both of these data sets are plotted above. The red curve corresponds to the corn data and the green curve corresponds to the bean data. As we can see, the centers and spreads of these two curves are different. These are clearly two different bell curves. They are different because their means and standard deviations don’t match. Since any interesting data sets we come across can have any positive number as a standard deviation, and any number for a mean, we’re really just scratching the surface of an infinite number of bell curves. That’s a lot of curves and far too many to deal with. What’s the solution? A Very Special Bell Curve One goal of mathematics is to generalize things whenever possible. Sometimes several individual problems are special cases of a single problem. This situation involving bell curves is a great illustration of that. Rather than deal with an infinite number of bell curves, we can relate all of them to a single curve. This special bell curve is called the standard bell curve or standard normal distribution. The standard bell curve has a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one. Any other bell curve can be compared to this standard by means of a straightforward calculation. Features of the Standard Normal Distribution All of the properties of any bell curve hold for the standard normal distribution. The standard normal distribution not only has a mean of zero but also a median and mode of zero. This is the center of the curve.The standard normal distribution shows mirror symmetry at zero. Half of the curve is to the left of zero and half of the curve is to the right. If the curve were folded along a vertical line at zero, both halves would match up perfectly.The standard normal distribution follows the 68-95-99.7 rule, which gives us an easy way to estimate the following:Approximately 68% of all of the data is between -1 and 1.Approximately 95% of all of the data is between -2 and 2.Approximately 99.7% of all of the data is between -3 and 3. Why We Care At this point, we may be asking, â€Å"Why bother with a standard bell curve?â€Å" It may seem like a needless complication, but the standard bell curve will be beneficial as we continue on in statistics. We will find that one type of problem in statistics requires us to find areas underneath portions of any bell curve that we encounter. The bell curve is not a nice shape for areas. It’s not like a rectangle or right triangle that have easy area formulas. Finding areas of parts of a bell curve can be tricky, so hard, in fact, that we would need to use some calculus. If we don’t standardize our bell curves, we would need to do some calculus every time we want to find an area. If we standardize our curves, all the work of calculating areas has been done for us.

The side mirrors have will turn indicator strips (2013 Mercedes). This vehicle has bullet proof windows, and the whole body of the car is bullet proof. This Mercedes has received a top safety award by Auto Weekly Magazine (autoweekly). The engine options are a V-8 or an incredible V-12 in a few countries. The Mercedes G-Class can go from zero to sixty in under eight seconds. This vehicle comes in a 349 horsepower version. The anti-lock breaks have a break-assist feature that ensures full power breaking in an emergency stop. Frontal and window airbags and anti-whiplash seat headrests are also standard in the G-Class. The Mercedes G-Class is classy, yet safe and powerful. Many people love these Mercedes so much because they are rare only; 5500 were made last year for civilians around the world. This type of performance and rare luxury car comes at a price. The sports utility vehicle is expensive itself, but this Mercedes is also a gas-guzzler. Short of a tractor, nothing can tackle mud as well as this Mercedes, but the owner will pay for it in town. In town, it only receives twelve miles per gallon in town and only fifteen on the highway. One must climb up into the driver’s seat, and the closeness of the windscreen and the vertical attitude of the A-pillars is a surprise at first. The electric seat and electric wheel adjuster will move far enough apart for the moderately tall to get comfortable. Headroom is vast. Around town, the G-Class feels firm, but beyond city limits, it is rough riding because it is meant to be an off-roading vehicle. One can see why Mercedes has sought to improve body control by fitting stronger springs to limit roll and improve cornering ability. They work well, but the trade-off is that the G-Class hops and skips where say, a Range Rover would not (Top Gear). The Mercedes G-Class was featured in a movie this year called Die Hard 5. This movie showed the G-Class at its best. People around the world wanted to know if this Mercedes was capable of such insane stunts. The television show from the United Kingdom Top Gear did a special on the Mercedes G-Class. The Mercedes is put into a mock chase. They pretend a spy has to reach a safe house in a certain time limit. They send three helicopters and some of the British Army to put this Mercedes to the test. The G-Class starts off being chased to the safe house from a busy town. This Mercedes reaches speeds of 130 miles per hour. The G-Class runs through blockades and even sidewalk benches. It is being shot at, but since it is bullet proof, this does not phase the G-Class. It finally gets out of city limits, and three helicopters cannot catch this amazing vehicle. The helicopters are only reaching 120 miles per hour. The British Army sets up traps to get the Mercedes, but instead of giving up, it is able to literally plow through a heavily wooded forest. The Mercedes G-Class has a uni-body. This means unlike most vehicles, it does not come apart. It is one piece of steel all the way around this sports utility vehicle. When the G-Class comes out of the forest, the Army tries to shoot the tires out because the G-Class is reaching the safe house quickly. They shoot out one tire, then two tires. This Mercedes is an all the time four wheel drive so it keeps on going. It is driving at a much slower pace now but only has one hundred yards till it reaches its destination. The British Army’s helicopters finally shoot the very last tire out. The Mercedes G-Class was short eleven yards to making it into the safe house (Top Gear). It was one against many, and the Mercedes G-Class put up a hard fight. This combination of sports utility vehicle and luxury will never make complete sense on paper, but if driven, it is easy to see why it soars past other automobiles like the Land Rover and Range Rover. If willing to pay the big bucks, this one of a kind off road vehicle is a treasure. There is not now and never will be another sports utility vehicle like it. It will outlast any automobile, so in the long run it is worth the extra money.
