Jack Johnson Essay Example for Free
Jack Johnson Essay Jack Johnson was born in Texas. He was the second in a family of nine children. His parents were slaves in their past then became successful Methodists. Speaking about his education, it must be mentioned that he studied at school only for five years and even was excommunicated for his statements about non-existence of the God. However, he succeeded in other field: it can be stated with certainty that the longest reigning Heavyweight Champion of the world was a man by the name of John Aurthur Jonson. (Zirin) Johnson had his first attack, a 16-round conquest, when he was 15. He became professional in 1897, working in private organizations and earning much money. Then he appeared under arrest and was imprisoned for the reason that boxing was an illegal occupation in Texas. Johnson left Galveston after release. (Horowitz 2007) In 1908, Johnson became a world champion after the battle with Tommy Burns. However he got the title only in 1910 after the fight with Jeffries in Las Vegas. After Johnsonââ¬â¢s fight with Jeffries race rebellion started. The Texas Legislature forbade movies of his winnings over white boxes being afraid of more rebellion. In 1913, Johnson ran away because of concocted accusations of breaching the Mann Acts provisions against transporting white women to the country for prostitution. (Horowitz 2007) Speaking about his hobbies, Remnick states that ââ¬Å"Johnson was fond of classical music and played the bass viol. In October, 1936, he took the role of Rhadames, the Ethiopian general, in a Chicago Grand Opera Company production of Aida. In no other country in the world are those who start at the bottom and reach the top more generally admired than in America. It is therefore quite impossible to exclude Johnson from Americas galaxy of self-made men, for he was certainly one of the most brilliant examples. His rise from poverty to international fame had in it all those elements of romance and glitter that unfailingly delight mankind. â⬠(Remnick 2003) Johnsons fighting technique and sport achievements Johnsons fighting technique was extremely individual. He worked out a more tolerant method than one expected that time: fighting protectively, looking for an error, and after that using it correspondingly. Johnson for all time started a session carefully, gradually turning over the sessions into a more insistent boxer. He frequently struggled to penalize his enemies sooner than hit them out, continually passing up their knocks and hitting with speedy blows. He usually showed that he had much more to present and, if pressed, he managed to blow rather effectively. (Zirin) Johnsons method was extremely successful; however it was assessed in the media as gutless and conniving. On the contrary, the white champion Jim Corbett had applied a lot of the identical method as ten years before, and was called by the media the cleverest man in boxing. One of the principal benefits of his techniques is that Johnson was able to make huge systematization of the already existing fighting methods. This is clearly seen through the strict structure of the fight, with each part addressing the separate aspect of the battle. (Horowitz 2007) Thus, step by step, the spectator fills the image of the fight which he has shown with additional aspects and details, making it multidimensional. The principal difference and one of the main advantages of this technique is that it is done through the protection, during which Johnson was learning the methods of his opponent to find a mistake then. (Zirin) This showed the perfect knowledge of the battle techniques that Johnson possessed ââ¬â in order to understand techniques he should have known them pretty well. Methodology which was used by the boxer is mostly learning ââ¬â Johnson spent rather long time speaking to people about the techniques to gather all information possible. As it was clear, the technique was absolutely strict, vivid, logical and correct. (Zirin) ââ¬Å"No better proof of Johnsons skill can be cited than the fact that his face, ears, and skin, unlike those of most pugilists, bore no disfiguring marks. â⬠(Remnick 2003) By 1902, Johnson triumphed in no less than 50 battles with black white and adversaries. He got his first title in 1903, in the fight with Denver Ed Martin. His attempts to get the full rank were let down as because Heavyweight Champion James J. Jeffries rejected to fight with him because he was black. Actually, Negroes could fight with white people however the heavyweight competition was very appreciated and popular arrangement in America that Negroes were not considered praiseworthy to take part in it. Nevertheless, Johnson had a chance to have a battle with ex- champion Bob Fitzsimmons in 1907. He finally got the World Heavyweight Title in 1908, after his fight with the world champion Tommy Burns. The battle had fourteen rounds and them was stopped because the Johnsonââ¬â¢s opponent was severely defected. After this winning over Burns, ethnic hostility among white people became so serious that a collectivist like Jack London spoke about Great White Hope to get the title back from black man ââ¬â who was rudely illustrated as a subhuman chimpanzee, bring it back it to the place it must be at, with the better white race. Being title owner, Johnson therefore had to fight many opponents billed by advertisers as great white hopes, usually in presentation competitions. In 1909 Johnson defeated such fighters as Tony Ross, Victor McLaglen, Al Kaufman, Frank Moran, Stanley Ketchel. ââ¬Å"The match with Ketchel was keenly fought by both men until the 12th and last round, when Ketchel threw a right to Johnsons head, knocking him down. Slowly regaining his feet, Johnson threw a straight to Ketchels jaw, knocking him out, along with several of his teeth. His fight with Philadelphia Jack OBrien was a disappointing one for Johnson: though scaling 205 pounds to OBriens 161, he could only achieve a six-round draw with the great middleweight. â⬠(Remnick 2003) Johnson had three wives; all of them were white women. However, he had no children. He died in the automobile accident happened on June 10, 1946, in North Carolina. Conclusion The fights of Johnson could be viewed as the basis for deep analysis and understanding of the methods which existed in the previous fights. The significance of the technique analyzed here is not under any doubts; it has become clear that the methods used by Johnson is so successful that it cannot be stated any other fighter has been able to create a better one even over the recent years. The significance of this technique is more increased through the two following factors: first of all, it has been done from inside of the battle with Johnson undertaking multiple efforts to learn partnerââ¬â¢s technique; and second, making the serious conclusions touching the need of opponentââ¬â¢s behavior learning. How Wind Turbines Assist in Generating Alternative Energy :: Wind Power Energy
How Wind Turbines Assist in Generating Alternative Energy Abstract I have researched how turbines assist in generating alternative energy. I found my research primarily from the Internet from sources such as the U.S. Department of energy. I then noted what a wind turbine does to help generate energy, and why it is used as an alternative energy. I also found disadvantages to using fossil fuels, and why it is important to use alternative energy like wind. I then researched how the wind turbine worked and what each specific component of the turbine did. Before researching, I hypothesized that wind turbines did very little to help the Earth's crisis of burning fossil fuels, but after researching, I discovered that many farmers and ranchers are using wind turbines to help conserve energy, and they are doing so at a very low cost. Using wind turbines can benefit everyone, and since it is a clean renewable energy, it will not pollute the Earth's atmosphere. Introduction A turbine is a machine, containing a rotor that has blades. The turbines are powered by momentum, and the kinetic energy is converted to mechanical energy. A turbine works by using wind to make energy, which is opposite of a fan. There are two basic groups of turbines, the horizontal-axis variety, and the vertical-axis design. There are also many sizes of turbines ranging from 100 kilowatts to several megawatts. A turbine is constructed of many parts, including an anemometer, two or three blades, a brake, a controller, a gear box, a generator, a high-speed shaft, a low-speed shaft, a nacelle, a pitch, a rotor, a tower, a wind vane, a yaw drive and a yaw motor. Wind Turbines 3 Figure 1 (U.S. Department of Energy, 2006) Figure 1 shows the components of the wind turbine. Each has a different function to aid the conversion of kinetic energy into mechanical energy. According to U.S. Department of Energy, the anemometer measures the wind speed and transmits wind speed data to the controller. The blades are lifted by wind and from that start to rotate. The brake is a disc brake, which is used to stop the rotor in emergencies. The controller starts up the machine at wind speeds of about 8 to 16 miles per hour; turbines do not operate at wind speeds above about 55 miles per hour because they might be damaged by the high winds. The gearbox is where gears connect the low-speed shaft to the high-speed shaft and increases the rotational speeds from about 30 to 60 rotations per minute (rpm) to about 1000 to 1800 rpm, the rotational speed required by most generators to

My Conflict Management Philosophy Essay
Everyone has to deal with conflict at least once per week. Conflict helps to try and put ourselves in other personââ¬â¢s perspective. It is important to ask question and listen the other personââ¬â¢s point of view. If we know what their interpretation of the situation is, then it is easier to work out a solution. I had faced all these by myself before. On the last Sunday afternoon, mother asked me to go out to buy the lunch. Unwillingly, I take the money that mother gave me then go out from the house. I went to the coffee shop that nearby my house to buy the lunch. On the way I go back to my house, I saw an accident happened at the road that nearby my house. I saw a motorcycle was hit by a car. There are some passengers went nearer to see what was happened including me. Surprisingly, I saw my friend, which was Kevin was lie down beside the motorcycle. I quickly go to support him and let him to sit on a side. After make sure that he did not had any serious injured, then I ask him to explain to me the whole matter. Originally, Kevin wanted to use the straight road, suddenly a car on his right hand side turned to the left. Kevin had no time to dodge then hit by that carââ¬â¢s driver who did not give signal when she turned to the left. As a result, Kevin was fall down with his motorcycle. Luckily Kevin just has a bit scratch on his hand and leg. On the other hand, the carââ¬â¢s door was dent. For the carââ¬â¢s driver, she was safe and just was shocked. The carââ¬â¢s driver quickly gets out from the car. The carââ¬â¢s driver was very angry when she saw her car was dent. She asked Kevin to pay for her loss. Kevin stand up and negotiating with the carââ¬â¢s driver. Kevin explained to the carââ¬â¢s driver that actually that is her false. According to the roadââ¬â¢s law, when a driver would like to turn a corner he or she should have to put a signal. Carââ¬â¢s driver did not accept Kevinââ¬â¢s explanation. She not only did not want compensate for the loss of Kevin, instead, she asked Kevin to pay for her loss. To solve this problem, Kevin suggested reporting to the police. The carââ¬â¢s driver accepted this suggestion. While wait for the police, one of passenger with her fast motion, walk to our direction and took out some medicine from her first aid kit. Actually, she is a St. John Ambulance member. She used her professional experience to help Kevin to sterilize and put some medicine on his wound. After 10 minutes more, police was came. The police men asked Kevin and the carââ¬â¢s driver narrate the whole process. They explained whole event to the police men. From that, the police men realise that the carââ¬â¢s driverââ¬â¢s confession had some problems. After that the police men continually asked the carââ¬â¢s driver some related questions. The carââ¬â¢s driver was leak out what she did when she was driving. The carââ¬â¢s driver was honest and told the police men what her did when she was driving. When she was driving, she did not paid attention because she was answering the phone and she did not give signal when she turned to the left. After police men know the whole process, police man told the carââ¬â¢s driver that according to the roadââ¬â¢s law, when a driver would like to turn a corner she should have to put a signal. Then the police man gave the carââ¬â¢s driver penalty ticket and asked her not to break the rules again. After received the penalty ticket, the carââ¬â¢s driver walked in front of the Kevin. She paid for his loss and said sorry to him. Kevin accepted her apologized. After that, all the people were dismiss. Kevin thanked to me and that passenger, which was member of St John Ambulance for lending him a helping hand. Then, we went back to our home. In conclusion, I had learned that it is very important to discuss among each other whatever anything happen.

Structure and Narrative Technique in Wurthering Heights...
Thomas Hardy employs an `omniscient narrator in his rural novel `Return of the Native, as he attempts to mimic classical tragedy by uniting the essential elements of time, place and action. The fact that the novel was originally intended to be of a five book structure, with monthly instalments, ending with a final, devastating climax, coupled with the numerous classical references to Hades. Hercules and Prometheus, shows even further Hardys desire to create an immensely tragic novel, void of a desire to please societies middle-class novel reading public. Although it was to be this novel which eventually underwent serious revision, `Wuthering Heights would have ultimately appeared as more baffling to Victorianâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One insistent feature of his language in the initial chapters, is the frequent use of guesswork; I suppose, perhaps and I conjectured. The effect of this style is to focus our attention on the narration itself, as Lockwood struggles to translate his impressions for us. Bront#235;s use of repeated guesswork and hesitancy allows us to remember that the novel is being relayed to us by a struggling, foreign observer. Due to this uncertainty, only a small portion of the story filters through to the reader, and we may expect that the effect of the narrative is rather economical. `Nicolas Marsh however argues differently in his essay `Analysing Wuthering Heights, as he claims that this lack of information paradoxically has the opposite effect, and that it creates an unlimited, obscured environment for the story itself to be encompassed within. Nellys language, on the other hand, can be vividly descriptive, as when she describes Cathy on the moors musing over a bit of moss, or a tuft of branched grass, or a fungus spreading its bright orange among the heaps of brown foliage. Sometimes her language is not unlike Lockwoods, as she claims Heathcliffs naturally reserved disposition was exaggerated into an almost idiotic excess of unsociable moroseness. However, once again the narrators character interferes
